***Reading Tarot as a Business—Record Keeping for the Sensitive Entrepreneur

This is the fourth in a series of articles designed to be a handbook on what is required to be the entrepreneurial psychic, the sole practitioner who owns his/her own successful psychic business.

So now our psychic businessperson has her (or his) skill level perfected, and has done market research by listening to the people she is serving well. She has framed an ad describing what she really does best from the clients' point of view. She is answering her phone and doing her sessions with the end in mind of staying in business by honestly delivering to the client what the client has come to her for. She is successfully avoiding clients she cannot serve in this manner. This is a so-far solid beginning.

Basic record-keeping things required for success as a sole practitioner in a service business are:

*A toll-free telephone number,
preferably one that is catchy, easy to remember. It can spell your name or your company name or even a word; it can have repeating numbers in a pattern. Calls come to me from people who called only once ten years ago because my phone number spells my company name, which describes me; and the caller, when asked 'What brings you back after all these years?' says 'I remembered the phone number.'

*A record-keeping system: The Day-book
Buy one of those full-sized 4-person appointment books with the time listed down the sides. In these columns you will write the name of the person you have served; the telephone number they called from (even if it is a hotel); the amount you billed along with the elapsed time if that is applicable; how they paid (and when if that is a different day). This book is your complete record for all the business of each day.

On the bottom of that page, or on a separate loose page you leave in the book (or ideally on the opposite page of an eight-person appointment book, which is more expensive), write each of the phone numbers that called you for each telephone line you have (even crank callers and wrong numbers), when they called, and who called. Ideally, also write each number YOU called, who that was, and when you called it. Some of those entries also appear elsewhere in that day-book, if the person had a session.

So your entry for a client who did business would look like this:

Esmeralda Pascua........408-000-0000.......7:15-7:45, 30 $100.........Approval #__(4-5-10)

You will put your telephone records somewhere near, or attached to, this book. You will bless yourself for this when someone disputes a credit card charge: As a telephone merchant, you have to document your transaction in detail in order not to be cheated out of income. Some banks are unreasonable.

When you 'settle' or 'batch out' your trans-machine, attach each of the printouts the machine does, to the day it is for. Now you can prove you charged what was appropriate, all on one neat record.

*Record-keeping system: The Customer-card
And buy some paper and some lined 5x8 index cards. Write the customer's name, address, telephone number, etc. and credit card information (or however-they-pay-you information), their email address, etc., on the paper. Turn the index card printed-lines out, blank side in. Scotch tape these two together at the top. Now you have a customer card with the name on the front to alphabetize, and the financial information conveniently on the flip side. Inside, you attach the customer's copy of the trans-machine tickets, overlapping one another showing the amounts.

This is all the record-keeping you need do. Psychic businesspeople often do not keep records, which will sooner or later be a problem. This system allows the businessperson to photocopy the customer card and the page of the day in question for proof the client DID call you, and how long you were on the telephone with him/her. This system also allows the entrepreneur to deliver to a tax accountant orderly records if, as is true of most Tarot readers and psychics, she is a stranger in the land of math.

*Reading Tarot for yourself is one skill.
The first phase, of course, is simply discovering cards' meanings. There are a number of ways to do this. Learning is between yourself and the deck, and is at your own leisure. You don't have to be correct. This is a fun activity, and you can do it with friends too.

*Reading Tarot for friends and people you know is another skill.
Reading for friends is once again at your leisure. Even though now you are expected to know meanings, you can fumble around, not know, even be wrong.

*Reading Tarot for strangers or regarding third parties is yet another.
Strangers expect more performance, and are probably going to give you some reward. They are often friends of friends, or neighbors. You can take your time, you can fumble around a little. Up to this level, you know some things about your querants: You are looking at them, you know something about their lives. You know their social level, and it is probably close enough to your own. Their culture and values are close to your own, probably. Your best next step is to do psychic fairs: face-to-face readings for strangers who spend a little something. Here you may be exposed to people of a different class from yourself. That would be a good thing.

*Reading Tarot over the phone for someone else's customers is another skill level.
You are in for a shock if you next decide to make a little money being a phone psychic for one of those 'hot lines.' Now people expect you to produce, be correct, and be quick about it. Some of these clients are rude. Many of them live in a different world from you, a different lifestyle. They are only a voice to you: No body language, no checking out their clothes, etc. Some of them are eating, drinking or tending to screaming toddlers. Some of these lines sell two-minute 'readings,' and you are supposed to perform! The employer has dumb rules, like 'you must not mention death, disease or divorce.' And you are being paid 25 cents per talk minute...around minimum wage, since there are not that many calls in an hour. A sense of humor, nerves of steel and a thick skin are job requirements, but of course they don't tell you that! Nevertheless, if you plan to be in business for yourself, this 'exposure' is valuable, since you can discover your own weaknesses at Hotline's expense. A year here could be five years' experience.

*Reading Tarot as a self-employed businesswoman is another WORLD, not another level. Many competent phone psychics never dream of having their own business. Lack of knowledge about how to start a business and lack of confidence are factors. Not wanting to sacrifice money to start a business is another. Banks aren't going to lend any 'unknown' money to be Mama Swami. Another common factor, believe it or not, is guilt!--guilt over charging money for services! Fear of not making enough money is very real and is justified. You won't, probably, in the beginning, these days. Many workers also are from humble circumstances, so owning a business itself feels scary.

Psychics with real talent are seldom entrepreneurial. What is THAT all about? Predatory entrepreneurs who pretend to be psychics invariably have little or no psychic ability. There are few successful self-employed business owners among psychics. People who own psychic lines are often not psychics themselves. The psychology of 'sensitives' does not include that drive, usually.

This is the second article in a series designed to be a handbook on what is required to be the entrepreneurial psychic, the sole practitioner who owns his own successful psychic business. Service professionals can apply most of this information to their enterprises as well.

Levels of skill in reading Tarot, or skill in other types of psychic insight, seldom lead to successful business ownership. In a sister article to this one, the steps in developing the skill of reading Tarot are described, and some reasons that skilled psychic or tarot professionals don't go into business for themselves are explained. Success in the ownership of any business is determined more by marketing than by the product. An entrepreneurial talent for marketing is especially a must if you yourself are the product you are selling, if you are a 'service professional.' The first thing you must know if you are marketing your own services is exactly what the product is: exactly what you can do for the client. How many times have you seen a 'life coach' professional say 'change your life'? How many times have you seen a psychic say 'psychic to the stars' or 'amazing gifts'? So who cares: 'What specifically can you do for ME?'

So, go market yourself. Find out what your clients feel you do; you may not know some of that. You may think you analyze their situation brilliantly for them, and they may think they feel better now, they can sleep. You may emphasize your brilliant analysis and they may feel, and say "You didn't tell me anything I didn't know, but now I put it together and I feel so much better." These two concepts (yours and theirs) probably refer to the same actions on your part, but the selling point is what the BUYER experiences. ASK them. Watch for phrases they all say. That is what you do, from the client's perspective. That is what you are selling. Analyze yourself as you work: Ask yourself what it is you are doing for this person, really. It is my clients who told me I pick up word for word what the person they deal with will say, and that I am 100% every time on describing the type of person he is inside. ("That's HIM, all right!) It is I who realized, from what clients said, that I am 'dead on' about how the person clients deal with views the client--about his motives, intentions and attitudes toward the client. Voila! This is MY selling point. Another point regarding my talent that I learned from clients is that it is a "big deal" to them that I don't need a name or a birthday to answer questions about their person of interest. I may do LOTS of other things well, but here is the product I reliably deliver from the market point of view. Here is my ad, my slogan, my selling point that I can use to promote myself.

Why is discovering your market's view of what you do so important? Because you want to find the people who are looking for exactly what you do because those are the clients who will call you many times! You seldom make a profit on your advertising from just the people who answer that ad; your income is from steady users, and the reason they are steady users is, they have a use for what you actually do for them. The art of the deal is TWO satisfied people.

When you advertise exactly what you do, first-time clients go away happy. Not only may they come back, they may tell friends. When they mention you to other psychics they call, you will get a reputation in the industry. If they are on a budget, you will be worth a little sacrifice.

The next step on the way to being the professional business owner is advertising. Trial and error will develop where it is best for you to advertise and what is the best wording of the ad. For 15 years, I found Cosmopolitan magazine my best source of good customers. Now I am trying a web site and social media: a new adventure for me.

Homework In this practice, it will be VERY helpful to have a handful of objects with personal representation - and to place them in a small shoebox (or container of some sort). This would be a receptacle of emotional value, of where you have invested much of yourself into for the past few years.

To start, begin by taking some quality time to list where your concentration has been for the last seven years. You can make it general or specific. There is no right or wrong way to do this - but you need to be genuine and WANT to create detachment.

When your list is complete, find different things that would be used to act as a symbol per item - and place it in the box. This again is necessary and beneficial to the meditation, so that you are completely involving your deepest thoughts, emotions, and memories. To give you an example of what I asking of you, my own focus has been on self-transformation, healing, spirituality, creativity, communications, individualism, work, family, friends, and trust. In my box, I have photos of individuals that I have had relationships with in the past seven years, a mirror for individualism, matches for transformation, a heart frame for trust, and so on. Do your homework first before moving on, as this is the main part of the exercise.

Once you have spent quality time on this part of the exercise, take this box of precious memories and put it somewhere faraway in your place, like the attic, or basement. I've done it a step further and dumped it in an empty trash bag.

Meditation: Sit for a few minutes alone, with eyes closed and a goal to relax. Calm all thoughts and emotions until you are aware of the quietness that surrounds you. With slow and deep breaths, feel yourself float into this calm energy, feeling your body and mind also adjusting to this quietness. All the noise disappears and you feel at peace. Pay attention to the soundless spirit, as you cleanse and exist with silence.

Visualization: Today's card image can assist you in this meditative affirmation. Take a look at the Eight of Cups and become part of the image. The first thing to concentrate on is the eight golden cups, which symbolize your box of treasured memories, where you have again, invested so much of yourself - creating a shrine of importance out of it and yourself. Visualize it and place it all where the cups are stacked. This is your 'junk drawer' (as I call it) - the items, the thoughts, and the emotions that have been embedded so deeply into the drawer and yourself. It's not needed anymore, but like the junk drawer, who takes the time to just dump them and make better use of the space. All this stuff represents who you were, and the memories are saved to prove it.

You are a different person (than you use to be), because of all the stuff you chose to collect and hold onto. Think about who you were before all these things became of great importance? Take all the time that you need to sit back and allow sensations to rise - the good AND the bad. Take a walk down memory lane and allow it to feel real. Once you've brought up all your feelings, notice what you experiencing, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually - and imagine yourself dumping all of this into your shrine as well. Visualize every last drop of what you have drudged up from the yesteryears, and force it all into those cups/box - like trying to pack an overstuffed suitcase. Use your hands if needed, to push it all away. Let it ALL go. Everything. Until you feel nothing is left to give.

Quietly, sit and rest. Breathe slowly, allowing all to be cleansed from your energy. No thoughts. No emotions. No memories. You should feel a sort of 'hollow emptiness'. That is suppose to be your normal state of mind - pure and natural. This is how you are suppose to feel when exhausting and severing ties with emotional attachments. You are only person who has put much importance into the shrine - no one else. Everyone else followed their path, and you went on yours. You made a HUGE sacrifice to find your way. There isn't a lot of traffic on this road, so loneliness was to be expected. All that you have learned, experienced, developed, and manifested in the past seven years - is ready to be put to rest. Your soul searching for change, answers, and healing has been completed. Although you have been guided in therapeutic and challenging ways - you relied on no one else to reach this point in your life. You have found what you were looking for. It is finished, and there is no more to 'figure out'. You have overcome great obstacles and because of your dedication - emotional balance and peace has been restored.

As in the image, you can now walk away and leave it all behind... your items, the junk drawer, the shrine that became your church of great self-compassion, forgiveness, life lessons, and healing. It is time to leave this part of you behind, as you have reinvented yourself in order to get back with the living. 'FEEL' the lighter weight as you detach from the heavy, decayed carcass that you have been holding onto - and living in. It serves no value or purpose anymore - just like when the body dies, the soul continues to live on. Life changes, and so has your direction. You are a new person, with a new purpose. Be aware of the great strengths that you have developed in these recent years - because of the path you chose. Your self-realization, self-trust, self-confidence, and self-reliance is all you need for protection and prosperity.

The Affirm: While being one with yourself, announce your trusted affirmation:

I forgive and release my shadows.
I have no reason to rely on the past.
I own the key to my prison cell.
I see life with a brand new set of eyes.
I'm much smarter and wiser now.

On a personal note, I wanted to share a thought while I was looking for a timing, and normally one might say 'well, it's the eight of cups - so use the number eight'. I went with my gut and chose the seven. As I continued to write, my astrological mentality drifted back seven years ago to 2003, which is when Uranus 'The Awakener' entered Pisces, ruling our illusions, dreams, and 'our reality'. If you connected with this meditation and affirmation, I want you to think about the number of major changes, breakdowns, and acts of defiance that were a part of your 2003 - 2010 to find your true self and worth. Uranus was literally 'waking us' to what we had been experiencing (or imagining) in hopes to release us from self-inflicted guilt, hopelessness, and drowning in our sorrows - to restore new faith and inspiration in our lives.
