"I'm not happy," she said. "I'm not prosperous. And all my friends are." She was in distress, was very upset. She presented no specific problem, just a very black mood. Hmmm. I knew I had talked to her before. I could not remember anything specific from the one short session she had had with me. She asked no question, so I asked her 'Why do you think your friends are all so happy? Why do you think they are all doing so well financially?'

Pause. Long pause. "Because they tell me that. And they are having such a good life. They have really nice clothes, they drive really nice cars." Voice is thin and distant now.

'Are you not as well dressed as they?' "No, I dress just like they do." 'Do you drive a similar kind of car as they?' "Sure, I have an Acura. It's just a year old."

'But you say their life is better and they are more prosperous. Why do you think they are so prosperous?' "Oh, they say they are. You know. They go on cruises on their time off."

I think I got it, by golly, I thought to myself. 'And when they say that, what do you say to them?' "Well of course I tell them I am doing so well. I tell them I go upstate to my uncle's estate." There was no uncle and no estate.
'Do you suppose what they told you was as dressed-up as what you told them?' You told them you were happy; they told you they were happy. They told you they were doing well financially, and you told them you were doing well too. Who is to say how much of that is true?'

This was truly news to her at that moment, in the mood she was in. It actually occurred to me I might be talking to someone who is sleepwalking.

Something told me to go in for the big splash. I told her 'Life is supposed to suck and we are supposed to make the best of it. If you are happy for more than a little while, you're missing something, you probably don't know what is going on. Whatever happiness any of us have, we make ourselves, and we have to work at it. That's life.' I suggested she have a heart-to-heart with these coworkers and friends, and she would find their lives were pretty much like hers, that they were projecting an image the same as she was. I reassured her this would be the case. Good-night. End of session.

The next morning, she called me and said "You talked me down from the ledge last night. You are really good. You said what I needed to hear. I was standing on the 10-inch ledge outside the window of my apartment, ready to jump. I had my cell phone. I just remembered your catchy phone number. DID YOU KNOW THAT?" I admitted I didn't know, replaying the conversation of that evening in my head. Subconsciously, I had sensed this? I remembered the sound of wind.

When we all project an image of our lives that is only the positive side, we are part of a conspiracy that distorts each other's reality. Projecting "I'm fine today" is generally a good thing, but like everything else, at some point too much of that good thing becomes competitive and crushes vulnerable individuals. Yes, she was probably a clinically depressed person, or maybe had taken the wrong pill: So what? People around you and me every day are in that boat too.

I suggest a truce in the positive image war: that we also show that, yes, we are struggling too.

When you are supposed to survive and a life-threatening situation is at hand, a message comes to you from anywhere it can. Be aware, it can happen to you!

Why you are supposed to survive may be an unknown: Perhaps you are a cog in a wheel of coincidence that leads to something important to divine plan. Who knows? The blueprints of the universe are not on public display.

Where did the knowledge come from that a certain client would be presented with a poisoned pizza by her husband? There was no signature on the information, but it was so insistent and so clear, that I delivered the message. This was not the first time I was 'called upon' to phone someone with a 'nutcase' type idea. Each time, the person accepted the idea and performed the action that saved them, which may mean God only sends messages to people who are going to listen?--through people who have the guts to make a fool of themselves?

So I called the lady, using the appropriate apologies.

"Oh?" she said. "Husband left 3 pieces of pizza on the table and went to take a shower, told me to help myself, he had his. What shall I do?"

"When he gets out of the shower," I suggested, "tell him that you were not hungry, so you took the wonderful pizza to his invalid mother (Husband was a mama's boy all the way.) and her nurse."

Inconvenient as it was, my client did exactly that.

Husband, informed of this, still in his after-bath attire, ran to his truck and hightailed it over to the house where Mother and the nurse were. He grabbed the pizza without a word and ran out the door. You can imagine the nurse's chagrin! "Why wouldn't he want me to have a slice of pizza?" she asked my client.

If a friend, or perchance your psychic, ever calls you with a plausible story that you should do something about something that is really happening right then: Don't think twice, DO IT, because if the friend is wrong, you have lost nothing if you do it; and if the friend is right, and you don't do it, you may not live to regret not doing it. The single most accurate indicator of a young lawyer's success, I objectively observed in south Florida as an humble court reporter, was this attitude: that he freely and enthusiastically wished riches on everyone, success to everybody around him. This puzzled me at first, so I paid attention.

I shared this observation with a young ambitious lawyer who, heading up a fairly new firm, bemoaned 'how impossible it was to hire young law graduates who were going to be an early success.' I asked him whether he meant financial success or professional success (which are not always the same thing). He said 'financial, of course.' This conversation was one of those that arose only because we shared the same bench while waiting for our respective hearings with judges. I told him my observation about well-wishers being winners and forgot the conversation. I assured him I had made a study of this, that it was based solidly on observation of a decade. I gave him examples of five-year attorneys who were financially successful despite having less talent than others in their field.

A few years later the lawyer ran into me. He thanked me profusely for my contribution. By then, I had forgotten the conversation and him. He reported that he had religiously applied my observation, that he had built himself a respected law firm this way, that he was incredibly prosperous and successful in such a short time, due, he said, to this one factor. He reported there was no exception to this method of hiring, that furthermore, the more the prospective hiree cheerfully wished wealth upon people around him, the more successful he would be in his law career: even the degree of well-wishing counted! Yes, he had made quite a study of the concept. It had made him rich. He was so happy as he recounted this story that I surmised the atmosphere in his law firm was upbeat, so upbeat he was feeling good, feeling optimistic. Strangely enough, this fellow did not become a client of mine!

Does this yardstick apply only to lawyers?

And why is it true?--because it truly is.

People who create wealth starting from 'zero' are Artists of the Deal. The Art of the Deal is two happy people. When a person creates business that makes the partner in the transaction happy, that partner-person comes back and does another deal if there is a way to do it. The lad or lassie who has the knack for consistently making others happy dealing with them will be wealthy for his/her circumstances. That is inevitable, you can see.

I submit that the attitude of wanting others around you to be wealthy predisposes you to create business deals mutually satisfactory to the parties. In other words, if I want you to be rich, I am likely to contribute to your being rich, and therefore you are likely to reciprocate if there is a chance to do that.
